Pacific Grove
“I have never been in any place so dreamlike. Indeed, it was not so much like a deserted town as like a scene upon the stage by daylight, and with no one on the boards."
– Robert Louis Stevenson
Who Lives Here
Founded as a Methodist retreat and the last dry town in California, Pacific Grove has never been the cool kid of the Monterey Peninsula – and that’s part of what makes it such a great place to live. It always feels authentic; never touristy. The down-to-earth community is big on tradition, with everyone coming out for several annual festivals like the Butterfly Parade and Good Old Days. An artists’ haven in the 1890s, Pacific Grove continues to appeal to artistic sensibilities – people who crave a small-town feel with an incomparable natural backdrop.
Residential Style
In keeping with the ambiance of the town, residential styles tend toward the traditional. Large, bright Victorians and 19th century cottages line narrow streets and dot the forest of big, beautiful oaks. No waterfront development means the many spectacular views of Pacific Grove’s rocky, curving shore are left unimpeded.
Activities and Entertainment
Pacific Grove’s downtown is all charm, all the time, with curated boutiques, art galleries, vintage and antique shops, and incredible restaurants like Passionfish – a destination spot for sustainable seafood and hard-to-find wines. You can’t beat Asilomar Beach for unspoiled beauty – both natural and architectural. Here you’ll find the largest collection of Arts and Crafts-style buildings at one location, designed by Julia Morgan, the architect of Hearst Castle. They also offer sailing, fishing, wine tasting, and horseback riding. Golfers will appreciate Pacific Grove Golf Links – the back nine was created by Jack Neville, co-designer of the infamous Pebble Beach course. A visit to the Monarch Grove Butterfly Sanctuary will never disappoint, but the biggest thrills come in October, when thousands of monarch butterflies arrive in the nature preserve for a migratory stop.
