Carmel Valley
Life’s a bit sunnier in Carmel Valley. Literally. When fog banks cast a gloomy pall over Monterey Bay’s coastal communities, locals head to Carmel Valley’s rangy expanse, known for year-round sun, rolling landscapes, and, of course, its world-class wineries.

This is cowboy country – only these cowboys wear designer denim and freshly polished boots. As much as sprawling homesteads and rustic vineyards define the population, so do luxury spas and golf resorts. The small community counts artists, ranchers, celebrities, old hippies, young families, and well-groomed retirees amongst its 4400-plus residents, and everyone mingles cheerfully as they cross paths at the weekly farmers’ market or the Wagon Wheel Coffee Shop. Safe neighborhoods, excellent schools, and an outdoorsy lifestyle make Carmel Valley a great place to settle down and stay for a while.
Residential Style
Carmel Valley’s real estate market mirrors its population, offering expansive hillside estates, rustic cabins, riverfront homes, and golf course properties. One thing they all have in common is the stunning backdrop of this pastoral river valley.
Activities and Entertainment
Carmel Valley makes wine tasting very convenient, with most sampling taking place in the downtown area’s 26 tasting rooms. You can also opt to take the Monterey Wine Trolley tour. In addition to its newfound wine country fame, Carmel Valley has become a fine dining destination. Lucia at Bernardus Lodge uses herbs and produce from its own gardens to create culinary delights that are both fresh and adventurous, as does the Valley Kitchen at Carmel Valley Ranch. Burn off any excess calories with a hike in the beautiful Garland Ranch Regional Park. Hiking trails range from flat and easy to steep and demanding to suit your strength and mood. If you push yourself a little too hard, treat yourself with a trip to Refuge, a 2-acre retreat with outdoor pools (cold, warm, and hot) and sauna, steam, and relaxation rooms. For a bit of culture, check out local artist Patricia Qualls’s Contemporary Art Gallery and the new (and surprisingly engaging) Moto Talbott museum, showcasing more than a hundred rare motorcycles, including a 1931 Harley once owned by Steve McQueen.
